Challenge: Our client, a photonics OEM, needed to increase their moving mass without altering the mounting footprint, sacrificing speed/throughput, or impacting cost. They also had an aggressive timeline to develop the product to win the program with their customer.
Solution: Motion Solutions redesigned the direct drive linear motor stages to accommodate ironcore linear motors, in place on the ironless motor in the prior design. The skewed magnet ways reduced cogging, which can typically be an issue in ironcore designs, to an acceptable level while increasing the force required to handle their new, increased payload.
Result: Motion Solutions was able to provide the redesigned stage at a reduced price and increased functionality. The photonics OEM was able to secure an additional contract for machines with the higher payload.
